The Solapur Chaddars are believed to date back to the year 1800 AD. Their rise is credited to the patronage of Madhavrao Peshwa, a powerful ruler of the Maratha Empire. This association with royalty speaks volumes about the quality and craftsmanship that have always been hallmarks of Solapur Chaddars.
Craftsmanship and technique
The production of Solapur Chaddar is an eight-step process that includes dyeing, winding, pirn winding, warping, weaving, cuffing, finishing, and bundling and bale packing. Each chaddar is woven with meticulous care. The process begins by changing bland yarns into bright threads. The yarn takes a colourful dip in dyes, transforming into a spectrum of hues. Machines twirl yarns onto spools and cones, prepping them for their weaving roles. The loom embraces these threads; warps are meticulously strung, and then weft yarns dance across them, creating the chaddar's magic. For the final flourish, precision cuts and expert inspection ensure flawless beauty. Washed, pressed, and bundled, the chaddars await their journey to homes everywhere.
The products so created are of exceptional quality and durability, featuring intricate patterns, vibrant colours, and eye-catching borders. Craftsmen create these mesmerizing designs using wooden looms or hand-spinning techniques while upholding its centuries-old traditionalism.
