The history of Bhavnagar is closely linked with the Gohil Rajputs, who established the city as the capital of their princely state in the early eighteenth century. Takhteshwar Temple
Rising above the city on a hilltop, Takhteshwar Temple is among Bhavnagar's most recognisable landmarks. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the white marble temple stands against the skyline and offers sweeping views of the city and the Gulf of Khambhat beyond.

Built in the traditional Gujarati style, the temple features eighteen ornate pillars, a spacious hall, and a sanctum housing the Shiva linga. Visitors reach the temple by climbing a series of marble steps that lead to the summit. During the evenings, the hilltop comes alive with locals who gather here to enjoy the breeze, the views, and the peaceful surroundings.

Brahm Kund and Sihor
About 22 kilometres from Bhavnagar lies Sihor, the ancient capital of the Gohilwad kingdom. The historic town retains traces of its royal past through its palace, traditional architecture, and sacred sites.

Among its notable attractions is Brahm Kund, a historic stepped water reservoir associated with spiritual traditions and local legends. Nearby, the Gautameshwar Temple Lake and the Shiva temple on its banks offer a serene setting that draws both devotees and visitors interested in the region's heritage. Together, these landmarks provide a glimpse into the cultural and religious life that once flourished in the old capital.

Velavadar Blackbuck National Park
Around an hour's drive from Bhavnagar is Velavadar Blackbuck National Park, one of Gujarat's most remarkable wildlife destinations. Spread across vast grasslands between seasonal rivers, the park is known for its thriving population of blackbucks, graceful antelope recognised by their distinctive spiral horns.

More than 1,800 blackbucks roam these open landscapes, often seen moving in separate groups of males and females. The park is also home to blue bulls, wolves, and over 120 species of birds. During winter, thousands of migratory harriers arrive from Siberia, creating one of the largest gatherings of these birds in the region.

An early morning safari offers the best chances of spotting elusive wildlife, particularly wolves, while accompanying guides add valuable insights into the area's ecology, wildlife, and local communities.

Shatrunjaya Hill, Palitana
A short journey from Bhavnagar leads to one of Jainism's most revered pilgrimage destinations, Shatrunjaya Hill at Palitana.

Covered with hundreds of intricately crafted temples built over several centuries, the hill is considered sacred because of its association with Adinath, the first Tirthankara of Jainism. Pilgrims begin their ascent before sunrise, climbing more than 3,750 stone steps to reach the temple complex at the summit.

The ascent itself forms an important part of the experience. White-robed monks, devoted pilgrims, and breathtaking views accompany travellers on their journey upward. Upon reaching the top, visitors are greeted by a remarkable cluster of temples whose spires create one of the most memorable sacred landscapes in India.
