A vast range of the natural world

The Kathlour Kushlian Wildlife Sanctuary, located 25 kilometres from Pathankot, stands as a verdant haven for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. This protected area, offers visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich biodiversity and serene beauty of the region, and spans over 1,867 acres. Established in 2007, Kathlaur Kushlian Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the largest in Punjab, hosting a variety of deer and ungulates. The sanctuary features dense forests with a closed canopy, open grasslands and several water bodies, supporting a diverse ecosystem. Its location on the banks of the Ravi river makes it an ideal destination for migratory and native birds.

The sanctuary is home to several species of deer, including chital, sambar, hog deer, and barking deer, which remain protected due to the vigilance of government authorities and local communities. You can also spot can spot elusive creatures like the Asiatic black bear, the Himalayan brown bear among other species. Additionally, the area boasts a variety of avifauna, such as grey and white partridges, white-humped vultures, parakeets, and spotted owls. To control human activity and protect the natural space, the wildlife sanctuary is divided into three zones: eco-sensitive, buffer, and core zones. Tourists are restricted to the eco-sensitive zone, while the core zone serves as the main refuge for wildlife and remains a protected area.

The sanctuary's lush, dense forests and winding trails create a serene and peaceful atmosphere, inviting visitors to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with the natural world. You can explore the sanctuary's well-maintained pathways, admiring the vibrant foliage, the gurgling streams, and the breathtaking vistas that unfold at every turn.

Educational opportunities and conservation efforts

You would be surprised to know that this sanctuary has long been recognised as a vital home for Himalayan black bears and Western Tragopans, two endangered species that require habitat protection to flourish. The Kathlour Kushlian Wildlife Sanctuary serves as an important hub for environmental education and conservation efforts. The sanctuary hosts various programs and workshops that aim to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the region's rich biodiversity and promoting sustainable practices among visitors and the local community.

To offer tourists a unique experience, the sanctuary provides an 11-seater improvised golf cart, a pollution-free and noise-free vehicle, for tours around the area. A 5-km long nature trail passing through the dense jungle is available for exploration. Private vehicles are banned, but a dozen bicycles are available for tourists. In the centre of the sanctuary, there is an island featuring a cafeteria. You can enjoy panoramic views of the forest and the Ravi river from two 30-foot towers. There are two activity points developed for children too. The sanctuary also offers basic amenities, such as restrooms and refreshment stalls, to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all visitors.

Just 20 kilometres away is the Hydraulic Research Station, a pioneering institution dedicated to studying and researching water resources. Make a point to visit Take a moment to marvel at the sheer scale of the work in progress that ensures safe water management for lakhs of Indians. Another place you can visit some 25 kilometres away is Shri Laxmi Narayan Mandir, a revered Hindu temple located in Ranjit Sagar Dam colony and dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi - symbols of prosperity and divine grace.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the sanctuary is during the cooler months of the year, from October to March, when the weather is pleasant and the chances of spotting wildlife are higher. This period also coincides with the migratory season, allowing visitors to witness the diverse avian life that calls the sanctuary home.
