Weaving Bhuj

A giant, open-air museum

If you’re a history buff, Bhuj will give you plenty of reasons to fall in love with it, as Bhuj's historical attractions are portals to a bygone era. Begin your exploration right at the heart of the city, where two ancient palaces stand as gleaming jewels – Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal. Aina Mahal, or the ‘Palace of Mirrors,’ lives up to its name with a dazzling display of mirrors and multicoloured glass. Right next door, Prag Mahal offers a contrasting architectural style – a blend of Italian Gothic influences, complete with a grand durbar hall and a 45-meter-tall clock tower that beckons you to climb its steps for panoramic views of the city.

For a unique historical adventure, delve into the royal past at the Chhatedi (or Chhatardis). These 18th-century cenotaphs, commissioned by Jadeja ruler Rao Lakhpatji, are a series of umbrella-shaped dome structures guarding the memories of Bhuj's royalty.

To delve deeper into the region's rich past, head to the Kutch Museum, the oldest in all of Gujarat. Within its walls lies a treasure trove of history, including the largest existing collection of Kshatrapa inscriptions dating back to the 1st century AD and examples of the extinct Kutchi script! A short walk away, take a moment to rest and reflect at the ancient Ramkund Stepwell, an architectural wonder and a historical landmark of the city.

Your royal adventure continues at the Sharad Baug Palace, the former residence of Bhuj's last king, Madansingh. This grand palace, now a museum, is a treasure chest of beautiful artefacts and memorabilia that bring the lives of the royals to life.

For a dose of serenity

Beyond its historical marvels, the city offers a vibrant blend of spiritual and natural wonders that you must check out. Among them shines the magnificent Shri Swaminarayan Temple.  Dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan, this pristine white marble temple is a masterpiece of intricate carvings, offering a tranquil escape amidst the bustling city.

For a dose of natural beauty, head to Hamirsar Lake, the largest man-made lake in the Kutch region. Rent a boat and glide across the tranquil waters, or simply stroll along the lakeside and soak in the spectacular views of the city's major landmarks. Feeling adventurous? Then, scale the heights of Bhujia Hill (or Bhujiyo Dungar). This natural hill formation offers a panoramic vista of the town sprawled below, with the majestic Bhujia Fort perched proudly on its summit.

Treasures beyond city limits

Venture a little further from the city and discover experiences that will leave you spellbound. Just a 10-km drive away lies the Vande Mataram Memorial in the Bhujodi village. The sprawling memorial park takes you on a multi-sensory journey through India's fight for independence. Explore statues, replicas of monuments, lush green lawns, and the Hiralaxmi Craft Park within the complex, where you can witness the magic of local artisans at work and take home a piece of Kutch's vibrant craft traditions.

Travel northeast of Bhuj and step back in time at Dholavira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most remarkable excavations of the Harappan culture or Indus Valley Civilization, dating back a staggering 4500 years. Don’t miss the purported world's first signboard here! There’s a Kutch Fossil Park nearby that boasts a collection of fossils, the real showstopper being a dinosaur fossil with its actual egg!

For a perfect blend of nature and spirituality, head to the westernmost edge of India to Narayan Sarovar, considered one of the five holy lakes by Hindus. Explore the seven stone temples and the nearby wildlife sanctuary, a haven for diverse wildlife and bird species. Don't miss the Siyot Caves (or Kateshwar Buddhist Caves)! Carved in the 1st century AD, these ancient caves feature five rock-cut structures and offer a glimpse into Buddhist history.

Journey 60 km south of Bhuj to discover the majestic Bhadreshwar Jain Temple, believed to be one of India’s oldest Jain temples. In awe of grand palaces? Check out the Vijay Vilas Palace, located about 66 km southwest of Bhuj, renowned for its intricate details and distinctive dome rooftops. Need some beach bliss? Go to Pingleshwar Mahadev Beach, 90 km east of Bhuj, to sink your toes into the golden sands or soak up the breathtaking sunsets.

Dive into the delish dishes of Kutch

After all that sightseeing, you need fuel for the stomach, right? Get ready to tingle your taste buds with local Kutchi specialities. Savour delights like dabeli (Kutchi burger), poha (a flattened rice dish) or khaman dhokla (fluffy steamed cake). For a filling meal, try lehsuni paratha (a flatbread with a garlic kick) or a typical Kutchi meal - odho (a local delicacy), garlic chutney, kadhi (a yoghurt-based curry), Bajre da rotla (pearl millet bread), and jaggery. If you want to sample a variety of Kutchi specialities in one go, order a Kathiyawadi Thali. Wash it all down with a glass of chilled chhaas (buttermilk). For a sweet ending, don't miss mesuk (melt-in-your-mouth delicacy), gulab pak, adadiya pak (winter delicacy) or jalebi (syrupy fried pastry).

Warning: Extreme shopping addiction likely!

Bhuj is a full-blown shopping extravaganza! Get ready to dive headfirst into a world of dazzling textiles, handcrafted wonders, and vibrant local finds. After all, Gujarat isn't called India's textile hub for nothing! Bhuj's markets are a treasure trove for fashionistas and anyone who appreciates top-notch handiwork. Shop for embroidered fabrics, shimmering glass beadwork, handcrafted leather products, and vegetable-dyed creations in every colour imaginable. The tie-and-dye bandhani patterns, the bold Ajrakh block prints, cosy woollen shawls, and unique kala cotton textiles – the list is endless!

From stylish footwear and trendy handbags to eye-catching accessories and silver jewellery, Bhuj has it all. Head to the Garvi Gurjari Emporium or explore the countless handicraft shops scattered throughout the city.

Set off on a craft-hopping adventure

Bhuj may be your starting point, but the heart of Kutch lies in its craft villages. Visit these artisan villages and witness skilled craftspeople at work. For connoisseurs of culture and art, this is one of the quintessential experiences in the Kutch region.

Begin your exploration at Nirona village, renowned for its intricate Rogan Art, exquisite copper bells, and lacquer-making techniques. Make your way to Ajrakhpur, a village that has gained global recognition for its Ajrakh block printing, an art form believed to date back to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. Venture to Sumrasar, a village that specialises in exquisite embroidery, where you can witness the artisans' deft hands bring intricate designs to life. Head to Bhirandiyara and step into traditional Bhungas (mud huts). This village is also known for its mava, a delectable concentric milk product. Gandhi Nu Gam is another handicraft village where local artisans practice traditional Kutch art on a variety of articles, including clothing, jewellery, and wooden artefacts.

Visit Hodka village, the homeland of the Meghwal community - masterful craft and embroidery artisans. Here, you can ride camels, shop for leather souvenirs, and be wowed by folk performances. Explore Dhordo, home to the three-month Rann Utsav festival. The village is known for its Tent City, warm banni hospitality, and exquisite embroidered articles. UNWTO awarded it the Best Tourism Village (2023).
