Along the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River stands a captivating confluence of romance, legend, and scenic beauty. Tezpur.
This ancient city in the Sonitpur district of Assam, rich in folklore and mythology, invites you to embark on a timeless journey. Here, valleys resonate with untold stories, and stones murmur the secrets of ancient times. Here, you'll find yourself immersed in the eternal love story of Usha and Aniruddha, the grandson of Lord Krishna. This tale has captivated hearts and minds for generations, which is why Tezpur is fondly known as 'the city of eternal love.’ As you explore the city, you'll discover archaeological wonders: ruins, inscriptions, and imprints that witness the reign of former royal families and the grandeur of ancient temples.
As you traverse the pathways of Tezpur, you'll be surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. The snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas and the hills of the neighbouring state of Arunachal Pradesh form a majestic backdrop, while the lush green valleys, tea estates and the ever-flowing Brahmaputra add to the city's charm.
Tezpur is also a hub of traditional dance forms, age-old music, and lively festivals that celebrate the region's diversity. No wonder it is the cultural capital of Assam!
So, come, let the eternal embrace of this ancient city captivate your soul.
The mythical origins of Tezpur
Local lore recounts an epic battle between Lord Krishna and the Asura king Banasura, fought on the soil of Tezpur. The conflict arose when Banasura imprisoned Aniruddha, for loving his daughter, Usha. From this clash, Sonitpur (Tezpur’s earlier name) derived its name – 'the city of blood.' Ultimately, Banasura was defeated, and the lovers were united forever.
Beyond myth, Tezpur's roots go back to the reign of the Mlechchha dynasty (650 - 900 AD), when it was known as Haruppesvera. Near the Rudrapada temple on the banks of Brahmaputra, you can find the famous nine-line rock inscription of Harjar Varma, which points to the city's existence from 829-30 AD. However, modern-day Tezpur was founded in 1835 by the British, marking a new phase in its fabled history.
A trove of historic treasures
Tezpur will enchant you with its ancient sites that transport you through the mists of time. Your journey begins at Agnigarh, the legendary site where the eternal romance of Aniruddha and Usha unfolded. Imagine standing atop this hillock where King Banasura kept his daughter captive. Today, you can admire the beautiful gardens adorned with sculptures and statues immortalising the lovers' tale while taking in the breathtaking view of the mighty Brahmaputra and the Kolia Bhomora Setu (one of India’s longest bridges).
Your next stop should be the Mahabhairab Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva and considered one of Tezpur's major ancient landmarks. It is believed that this temple was established by the demon king Banasura himself, housing one of the world's largest Shiva Lingas, an aniconic representation of the deity.
Situated on the right bank of the Brahmaputra, the Bamuni Hills beckon you with their awe-inspiring sculptural ruins and stone carvings dating back to the 9th and 10th centuries. As you go towards the west of the city, the ruins of the door frame at Da Parbatia Temple stand as one of Assam's finest and oldest examples of sculptural art. The intricate carvings on the frame are characteristic of the early Gupta school of sculpture.
If you seek an immersive journey into the past, head to the District Museum, where a wide collection of artefacts and structures await - from ancient relics to traditional Assamese textiles.
