A paradise for wildlife lovers
Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary once thrived with more than 70 majestic Indian rhinos in the early 1980s. Tragically, their world was turned upside down as poachers turned it into a hunting ground. Fast forward to 2016, the sanctuary made headlines with the grand return of two special visitors - a mother and daughter duo of rhinos from the Kaziranga National Park! These gentle giants were part of the ambitious Indian Rhino Vision 2020 program, bringing renewed hope and excitement.
However, nature has its own script, and sadly, both rhinos passed away within months due to unforeseen natural causes. Nonetheless, Laokhowa remains a beacon of hope for animal lovers and nature enthusiasts. It is home to many rare species of wild animals, making it a habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna. For this reason, the sanctuary is often referred to as a paradise for wildlife lovers!
In addition to its diverse mammal species, there are over 200 bird species in the sanctuary, including both resident and migratory types. The endangered Bengal Florican is undoubtedly one of the most notable bird species that has made a home here.
