Hear the call of the wild!

Get ready for an adventure that’s sure to thrill!

Step into the Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary, a hidden gem tucked away on the southern banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River, about 40 km from Tezpur. Spanning a sprawling 70.13 square kilometres, this vibrant sanctuary is a playground for some of nature's most fascinating inhabitants and a crucial part of the breathtaking Laokhowa-Burachapori ecosystem.

As you journey through lush greenery, keep your eyes peeled for the legendary Indian rhinoceros grazing peacefully, while the wily Asiatic water buffalo struts around like it owns the place. But the excitement doesn’t stop there! You may even spot a Bengal tiger slinking through the tall grass or an Indian leopard perched majestically in the trees. And don't forget to listen for the enchanting calls of over 200 bird species, including colourful migratory guests who stop by to add a splash of colour to the skies.

The sanctuary opens its gates to tourists from November through April, inviting you to explore its wild beauty and perhaps catch a glimpse of the incredible wildlife that calls it home. So pack your bags, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready to dive into the wild wonders of this extraordinary sanctuary!

A paradise for wildlife lovers

Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary once thrived with more than 70 majestic Indian rhinos in the early 1980s. Tragically, their world was turned upside down as poachers turned it into a hunting ground. Fast forward to 2016, the sanctuary made headlines with the grand return of two special visitors - a mother and daughter duo of rhinos from the Kaziranga National Park! These gentle giants were part of the ambitious Indian Rhino Vision 2020 program, bringing renewed hope and excitement.

However, nature has its own script, and sadly, both rhinos passed away within months due to unforeseen natural causes. Nonetheless, Laokhowa remains a beacon of hope for animal lovers and nature enthusiasts. It is home to many rare species of wild animals, making it a habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna. For this reason, the sanctuary is often referred to as a paradise for wildlife lovers!

In addition to its diverse mammal species, there are over 200 bird species in the sanctuary, including both resident and migratory types. The endangered Bengal Florican is undoubtedly one of the most notable bird species that has made a home here.
