A lush haven for nature lovers

As you explore the lush landscapes of Assam, you will come across the captivating Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary, an expansive protected area covering 175 square kilometres. Situated at the foothills of the majestic Great Himalayan Range, this sanctuary provides a stunning backdrop that will draw you in. Established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1998, it’s conveniently located just 52 kilometres from Tezpur.

This sanctuary is not just a refuge for flora and fauna; it is also steeped in history. Originally designated as the Sonai Rupai Game Sanctuary in 1934 by British authorities, it encompassed 85 square miles of the Charduar Reserve Forest, which was created during British rule in 1878. The sanctuary takes its name from a small river that meanders through the area and is home to four rivers: the Gabharu, Gelgeli, Sonai, and Rupai.

While wandering along its tranquil trails, prepare to be enchanted by the diverse wildlife that calls this sanctuary home, creating memories that will last a lifetime!

A treasure trove of wildlife wonders

Step into the enchanting realm of the Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary where a treasure trove of nature's wonders will leave you wide-eyed and heart-thumping! It’s like stepping into a living postcard, where a vibrant tapestry of plants and trees greets you at every turn.

This sanctuary is a bustling haven for wildlife! Keep your eyes peeled for majestic creatures like the Indian Bison and gentle giants roaming the land - yes, elephants in their element! You might even catch a glimpse of the elusive tiger or the leopard sneaking through the lush greenery. Oh, and don’t forget about the charming deer, who seem to prance around like they own the place!

If your heart races at the thought of feathered friends, you're in for a treat! From vibrant resident birds to graceful migratory ones, the skies above are like an avian parade. You may catch a glimpse of white-winged wood ducks flapping by and hear the melodic calls of hornbills filling the air! And for those who can appreciate a little thrill, keep an eye out for the slithering serpents like the mighty python and the striking Russell's Viper.

Yet, it's not just the wild residents that make Sonai Rupai special; the picturesque backdrop of the Himalayan foothills turns this adventure into a feast for the eyes. The crisp air, breathtaking views, and serene moments will make you wish time could stand still.
