Junagadh — Gateway to Gir, Forts and Sacred Hills
Located at the foothills of the Girnar range in the western Indian state of Gujarat, Junagadh is a city layered with ancient history, royal legacies, and sacred geography with unique natural landscapes. Once the capital of the former princely state of Junagadh, the city has evolved as a centre of heritage, wildlife tourism and traditional culture.
A City Shaped by Dynasties and Devotion
Junagadh’s recorded history stretches back over two millennia. It was an important centre during the Mauryan period, evidenced by the Ashokan Rock Edicts, among the oldest inscriptions in India. Over centuries, the city came under the rule of dynasties such as the Chalukyas, Mughals, and later the Babi Nawabs, whose architectural imprint still defines much of Junagadh’s skyline.
The city’s location at the base of the Girnar hills made it a strategic stronghold shaping its identity as a fortified capital centre.
Why Visit Junagadh
Forts, Palaces and Architecture
Uparkot Fort is one of Junagadh’s most iconic landmarks. Its massive walls enclose ancient stepwells such as Adi Kadi Vav and Navghan Kuvo, along with Buddhist cave remains, reflecting multiple phases of occupation. The Mahabat Maqbara, a 19th-century mausoleum, is renowned for its ornate Indo-Islamic architecture, intricate carvings and spiraling minarets.
Sacred Hills and Pilgrimage Traditions
Mount Girnar is among the most sacred sites in western India. Pilgrims climb over 10,000 stone steps to reach a complex of temples revered by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists. The hill is associated with Lord Dattatreya, Jain Tirthankaras, and ancient ascetic traditions.
Major religious events such as the Girnar Parikrama attract thousands of devotees annually, transforming Junagadh into a vibrant centre of faith and ritual.
Nature, Wildlife and the Gir Connection
Junagadh serves as a major gateway to Gir National Park, the only natural habitat of the Asiatic lion. The surrounding landscape includes dry deciduous forests, reservoirs and hill ecosystems, making the region significant for biodiversity and eco-tourism.
The nearby Sakkarbaug Zoo, one of India’s oldest zoological parks, has played an important role in the conservation and breeding of Asiatic lions.
Arts, Culture and Local Life
Junagadh reflects the cultural richness of the Saurashtra region. Traditional folk music, devotional bhajans, garba and local festivals are integral to everyday life. Handicrafts, silver jewellery and bandhani textiles are commonly found in local markets.
Gujarati cuisine dominates the food scene, with local thalis, farsan snacks and sweets forming an essential part of the visitor experience.
Local Flavours and Markets
A visit to Junagadh offers opportunities to sample authentic Kathiyawadi and Gujarati cuisine, known for its balanced use of spices and textures. Local bazaars near the old city and temple areas showcase everyday life, religious offerings and regional produce.
