A glimpse into Assam's cultural heritage

Do you believe in the concept of time travelling? Well, in the heart of Tezpur lies a place that takes you back in time. Get ready to witness the beauty of Assamese culture as you enter Jyoti Bharati, aka Poki. And you'll be amazed to know that this building was home to Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla, a true Renaissance man who was a poet, dramatist, artist, musician, filmmaker, and freedom fighter all rolled into one. Built-in 1874 by Hari Bilash Agarwalla (grandfather of Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla), Jyoti Bharati was Tezpur's first proper brick (pucca) house.

Walk around, and the architecture alone will make you stop and stare: thick walls blending Rajasthani and Ahom styles, a sprawling 50x20 courtyard with flat stones that tell stories of creativity and courage.

Come, let's embark on a journey that will connect you directly to the soul of a remarkable place and its remarkable inhabitants.

A shelter for the revolutionaries

Would you believe a single house could be a powerful symbol of India's fight for freedom? Poki was exactly that – a hub where national heroes gathered and revolutionary ideas took shape. When you walk through these rooms, you're walking where leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Lala Lajpat Rai once stood, discussing the future of a free India. This wasn't just a home but a strategic nerve centre where critical decisions about Assam's socio-political landscape were made. But Poki wasn't just about political meetings; it was a creative sanctuary, too. Here, Jyoti Prasad Agarwala wrote the script for Joymoti, the first Assamese movie.

Just a short stroll away, you'll find the Mahabhairav Temple, a spiritual landmark that offers a unique insight into the local religious culture and stunning architectural details. And if you're a history buff, you'll be fascinated by the Da-Parbatia ruins, which offer intriguing archaeological insights and ancient temple ruins that will transport you back in time.
