The birthplace of Assam’s Vaishnavite tradition

When you visit Batadrawa Than, also known as Bordowa Than, in Nagaon district, you’re stepping into a place deeply connected to Assam’s history and spirituality. This is the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardev, one of Assam’s greatest saints and social reformers. The monastery, also called Than, is a peaceful spot where you can learn about his life, his philosophy and teachings.

A window into Assam’s culture

Batadrawa Than is also an important cultural center. As you walk through its hallowed halls, you’ll discover beautifully preserved manuscripts, relics, and traditional artefacts that take you back to when Sankardev’s teachings laid the foundation for Assam’s Vaishnavite tradition, and this site preserves that legacy. As you explore, you’ll feel the sense of devotion and history that surrounds this sacred place.

A revered haven amidst nature

The picturesque setting of Batadrawa Than adds to its charm. The area is surrounded by greenery, with ponds, trees, and open spaces that are refreshing and calm. Spend some time by the peaceful Dighali Pukhuri, the large pond near the monastery, and let the quiet atmosphere rejuvenate you. It’s an ideal spot to relax, enjoy nature and discard the stress of everyday life.

Festivities, celebrations and traditions

Time your visit during the celebrations of Sankardev Tithi or Holi (Doul Utsav), and you’ll witness Batadrawa Than in its full glory. Imagine yourself standing amidst the colourful festivities, with devotees dancing in the traditional Sattriya style, singing kirtans (hymns), and enacting the Bhaona plays, a unique theatrical tradition introduced by Sankardev himself. These festivals are a great way to experience the cultural richness of this place and its traditions.

Exploring beyond Batadrawa

It’s nice to take the two-hour drive to Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its one-horned rhinoceroses and other wildlife. You can also visit the picturesque town of Tezpur, home to ancient temples like Agnigarh and the Kolia Bhomora Bridge over the Brahmaputra River. The Bordowa Satra, established by Sankardev, is just a stone’s throw away. Together, these destinations complete a journey filled with culture, nature, and spirituality.
