A fairytale-like architectural marvel

As you wander through the vibrant streets of Bhuj, the air is filled with the scent of spices, and the colours of local crafts dance in the sunlight. Amidst all this, you will come across Prag Mahal, an architectural marvel that looks as though it has leapt straight out of a storybook - specifically, an Italian one! This magnificent palace, located in the heart of India, will leave you wondering if you have travelled to the wrong country.

Commissioned by the flamboyant Rao Pragmalji II, Prag Mahal was designed by Colonel Henry Saint Wilkins, who clearly had a flair for the dramatic! With 3.1 million rupees spent, this masterpiece opened its doors in 1879, just in time for some royal selfies with the next regent, Khengarji III.

And if you think it can’t get any more exciting, think again! This palace has graced the silver screen in blockbusters like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Lagaan, proving it’s not just a pretty face - it’s a superstar in its own right! So, fasten your seatbelt (or maybe your camera strap), because exploring Prag Mahal is a ride through history, culture, and the glitz of film, all wrapped up in one jaw-dropping package!

Step into a world of exquisite artistry

Begin your adventure in the main palace halls, where every corner reveals a story of elegance and artistry. For the bold at heart, climb the winding staircase of the breathtaking 45-meter bell tower - your reward? An exhilarating panoramic view of the vibrant city below that will leave you awestruck!

As you make your descent, take a moment to pause and explore the intriguing cracks in the stone walls, a testament to the earthquakes that have shaped this magnificent structure through the years. Before you exit, indulge in a refreshing glass of freshly squeezed sugarcane juice; it's the perfect way to wrap up your visit!

Prag Mahal is an architectural marvel, where exquisite Italian marble and Rajasthan sandstone come together, meticulously crafted by skilled artisans, including the remarkable Mr. James Wilkinson. When you step into the main hall, you'll find an impressive collection of taxidermy. Be sure to visit the Durbar Hall, which is adorned with dazzling chandeliers and Italian-style statues that capture the essence of a bygone era.

Experience the perfect fusion of cultures and history

The palace beautifully blends Indian and European Gothic influences. Admire the intricate Jali work that features flora and fauna reminiscent of European art, alongside grand Corinthian pillars that echo the charm of Italian Gothic elegance. And don't forget to discover the hidden gem of a tiny Hindu shrine, intricately carved from sandstone, tucked away in the peaceful aangan (courtyard) behind the palace.
