History of the National Park
Velavadar was established as a protected sanctuary in July 1976 with an area of approximately 18 square kilometres. Recognising the ecological importance of the region, authorities expanded the protected area in 1980, bringing its total area to 34 square kilometres.
While it remains one of India's smaller national parks, Velavadar supports a remarkable diversity of wildlife. Its protected grassland ecosystem plays an important role in conserving species that depend on open habitats, making it one of Gujarat's most significant wildlife destinations.
Wildlife of Velavadar
The undisputed star of the park is the blackbuck, one of India's most elegant antelopes. The males are easily identified by their dark coats and impressive spiral horns, which can grow up to 65 centimetres in length. Large herds often roam the grasslands, with males, females, and fawns typically forming separate groups.
The park is also home to nilgai, India's largest antelope, which can frequently be spotted grazing across the open landscape. Visitors may occasionally encounter wolves, among the park's most elusive residents. Early morning safaris offer the best chance of spotting these shy predators before they retreat from the rising heat of the day.
Birdlife is equally impressive. More than 120 species of birds have been recorded in and around the park. During winter, thousands of migratory harriers arrive from Siberia and Central Asia, transforming Velavadar into an important seasonal refuge. Watching these birds glide low over the grasslands at dusk is among the park's most memorable experiences.

The most pleasant time to visit Velavadar Blackbuck National Park is between November and February, when temperatures are comfortable and migratory birds arrive in large numbers.
Early morning safaris are particularly rewarding, offering the best chances of spotting wolves and observing wildlife during the most active hours of the day. Winter months are also ideal for birdwatching, as thousands of migratory birds make the grasslands their seasonal home.

By Road: Velavadar Blackbuck National Park is located about an hour's drive north of Bhavnagar and is easily accessible by road. Private taxis and self-drive vehicles are the most convenient options.
By Rail: The nearest major railhead is Bhavnagar Railway Station, which is connected to several cities within Gujarat and beyond.
