Aanayoottu traces its roots to Kerala’s long-standing cultural and spiritual traditions, where elephants are revered as sacred animals and feeding them is believed to bring blessings and prosperity. Held at the historic Vadakkumnathan Temple, renowned for its traditional Kerala architecture, the event draws thousands of devotees and visitors every year.
More than a ceremonial feeding, Aanayoottu reflects the region’s rich ritual heritage. The occasion features elaborate rituals such as the Gaja Pooja and the Ashtadravya Maha Ganapathi Homam, conducted by 50 priests under the guidance of the temple Tantri. As part of the offerings, devotees present 10,008 coconuts along with large quantities of jaggery, beaten rice, puffed rice, sesame seeds, honey, sugarcane, and lemons.
One of the most captivating moments of the festival is the gathering of unadorned elephants, which are worshipped and ceremonially fed in the presence of enthusiastic crowds. The elephants are served rice balls, pineapples, and other local delicacies, creating an atmosphere of celebration, devotion, and cultural pride.
