Born on the shores of Mahabalipuram
The Department of Tourism, Tamil Nadu launched the first edition of the Tamil Nadu International Kite Festival in August 2022 at TTDC Ocean View, ECR, Mahabalipuram — a bold new addition to the state's tourism calendar, timed to the spirit of Independence Day. From its very first edition, the festival's ambition was clear: to put Tamil Nadu on the map of international kite festivals and to use the open skies of its magnificent coastline as a stage for the world's finest kite artists. Following the success of its first two editions in Mahabalipuram and Kanniyakumari, the festival travelled to Madurai for its third edition before returning to the iconic ECR coastline for its fourth edition.
The chosen venue of Thiruvidanthai Beach near Mahabalipuram provides a uniquely resonant backdrop — Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its rock-cut monuments and ancient temples dating back to the Pallava dynasty, and its proximity to Chennai and reputation as a heritage destination make it an ideal location for an international event that draws cultural tourists and casual visitors alike.
Four days of spectacle above the Bay of Bengal
Against the backdrop of the East Coast Road coastline, the festival features international kite specialists from France, Germany, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Switzerland, and India, performing acrobatics and LED shows that stretch from late afternoon into twilight. The festival showcases over 250 spectacular kites, with professional kite flyers painting the skies with vibrant colours and intricate designs in a breathtaking display that symbolises unity, culture, and the beauty of our planet.
Each edition carries a distinctive theme — past years have championed marine conservation, with giant kites shaped like dolphins, sharks, and octopuses turning the sky into an ocean. The festival also features a Giant Kite Show, acrobatic kite flying, shopping, delicious food stalls, and a special Kids Carnival, making it a complete family experience. As the sun sets over the Bay of Bengal, the spectacle shifts — NAMMA DJ Concert evenings add music and energy to every festival night, drawing crowds long after the last kite has been reeled in.
Cultural performances, photography contests, and exhibitions run throughout the four days, ensuring that even those who have never held a kite string leave with memories worth keeping.
