A journey through history
Raj Ghat lies near the river Yamuna and was originally known as historic ghat. Later it came to symbolise a memorial area named after it which marked Mahatma Gandhi's Antyeshti (last rites), held on 31 January 1948, one day after he was assassinated. Its design was created by Vanu G. Bhuta while landscaping and planting were performed by Alick Percy-Lancaster who held the post of Superintendent of Horticultural Operations in Government of India.
An aura of simplicity
Set among lush gardens, the black marble structure exudes an air of purity and austerity that perfectly captures the life and philosophy of its subject. Its design features unadorned lines and clean facade, creating a timeless quality both understated yet impactful; while a Chattri-inspired canopy provides visitors a safe haven to pay their respects to this great leader.
