The eternal flame of patriotism
At the heart of the National War Memorial, the Amar Jawan Jyoti burns as a symbol of India's enduring respect for its fallen heroes. This eternal flame, originally lit beneath the iconic India Gate in 1972, found its new home here in January 2022. The flame, accompanied by an inverted bayonet and a soldier's helmet, stands as a poignant reminder of the sacrifice made during the 1971 India-Pakistan War and all conflicts since. As dignitaries from India and around the world lay wreaths before this solemn tribute, the Amar Jawan Jyoti continues its silent vigil, embodying the nation's collective memory and gratitude. This sacred flame invites visitors to pause, reflect, and honour the indomitable spirit of those who gave their all for the country, making the National War Memorial a place of profound national significance and personal contemplation.
The circles of honour
As you enter the National War Memorial, you embark on a profound journey through concentric circles, each representing a facet of military service and sacrifice. At the heart lies the Amar Chakra (circle of immortality), where an eternal flame flickers atop an obelisk, a constant reminder of the undying spirit of fallen heroes.
Moving outward, you enter the Veerta Chakra (circle of bravery), where six bronze murals vividly depict the courageous acts of the Indian Armed Forces. The Tyag Chakra (circle of sacrifice) envelops you next, its walls bearing the names of fallen soldiers etched in golden letters on granite tablets. Finally, the Raksha Chakra (circle of protection) forms the outermost ring, its trees standing sentinel, symbolizing the unwavering guard of India's protectors.
As you traverse these circles, each step brings you closer to understanding the depth of sacrifice and the enduring legacy of those who gave their all to the nation. This thoughtful design honours the fallen and illustrates the eternal cycle of duty, bravery, and protection that defines military service.
