Nestled near India Gate in the majestic Jaipur House, the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) stands as India's premier sanctuary of modern art. Established in 1954, this cultural treasure house showcases the evolution of Indian art from the mid-18th century to the present day. The museum houses an impressive collection of over 17,000 artworks by more than 2,000 artists, including masterpieces by renowned artists like Thomas Daniell, Raja Ravi Verma, Abanindranath Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore, and Amrita Sher-Gil. The butterfly-shaped building, with its central dome designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield, became even more impressive in 2009 with a new wing that expanded its exhibition space to 12,000 square meters, making it one of the world's largest modern art museums. Visitors can explore various forms of artistic expression through paintings, sculptures, graphics, photographs, and installations. The museum also features modern amenities including an art reference library, documentation centre, conservation laboratory, preview theatre, auditorium, museum shop, and cafeteria.
