A living link to the Buddha

Established to commemorate the 2500th birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha, the Buddha Jayanti Park, nestled within the Central Ridge Reserve Forest in New Delhi, is a serene, sprawling green expanse that stands as a testament to peace and enlightenment. Its establishment was a collective effort to create a space where spirituality and natural beauty converge. Since its inception, it has become a cherished retreat for seekers of solace.

The Bodhi sapling

Buddha Jayanti Park, situated in the southern part of the Delhi Ridge, holds a special treasure—a sapling of the original Bodhi Tree.

In 1964, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Sirimavo Bandarnaike presented a sapling of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree to India. This tree is a direct descendant of the original Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya and had reached Sri Lanka via a gift of its sapling from Emperor Ashoka.

The sapling gifted by Sri Lanka and planted at the ridge by then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri is now a huge, flourishing tree and a direct link to the Enlightenment.

Embodiment of gratitude

At the centre of the Buddha Jayanti Park is a spectacular Buddha statue, gifted by the people of Tibet to express their gratitude for their welcome to India.

Installed on an island amidst the waterway system and surrounded by a parikrama or circumambulatory path and a circular stone path, the statue rests atop a square platform. This is a low embarkment, lined with coloured stone rings, each colour representing elements as defined in Kalachakra Mandala where yellow stands for earth, white for water, red for fire, black for air and green for space.
