The living chronicle of India's diverse cultural heritage

Situated on the picturesque Shymala Hills of Bhopal, the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS) serves as a sprawling canvas that captures the essence of human evolution and cultural diversity. In 1970, during an Indian Science Congress session in Calcutta, Sachin Roy, the President of the Anthropology and Archaeology section, highlighted the urgent need for a ‘Museum of Man’ in India. Responding to this call, the Madhya Pradesh State Government generously offered 200 acres of land, leading to the formal establishment of the museum in the state. Officially inaugurated in 1979, and initially located in New Delhi, this museum not only preserves heritage but actively showcases the living traditions of India.

IGRMS is a treasure trove of anthropological wonders, showcasing everything from traditional dwellings to sacred rituals through exhibitions that are broadly categorised into open exhibitions, indoor galleries (Veethi-Sankul and Bhopal Gallery) and periodic/temporary exhibitions. The Veethi-Sankul and Bhopal Gallery are among the indoor marvels that display an array of artefacts and multimedia presentations, illustrating the rich tapestry of India’s ethnic diversity and technological advancements over the centuries. The indoor galleries showcase a wide variety of ethnographic exhibits: Human Bio-Cultural Evolution, Human Odyssey, Lingo Yatra (Festival of the Koitor), Mandwa Gohri (Bhil-Rathwa Ritual exhibits), Ethnic Art, Belief-system, Cosmology and Rituals Arts, Ethno-musical Gallery, Masks, Ethnic Cuisine and Folk Art Traditions, Visual Storage and Research Gallery, Culture of the North-East India and Island treasures of India. Additionally, the museum features various presentations under online exhibitions, travelling exhibitions, special exhibitions and ongoing exhibitions. The museum's open-air exhibitions include Tribal Habitat, Coastal Village, Desert Village, Himalayan Village, Rock Art Heritage, Mythological Trail, River Valley Culture, Aiyyanar Shrine Complex and Traditional Technology Park.

In addition to showcasing material culture and intangible heritage, the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya also preserves and presents diverse natural features, landscapes, and ecosystems. These elements hold significant cultural, scientific, aesthetic, and ecological value, enriching the museum's comprehensive approach to heritage and preservation.
