The MP Tribal Museum in Bhopal is a place you don’t want to miss if you’re curious about the tribal heritage of Madhya Pradesh. As you step in, you’re surrounded by the lives of the state’s seven major tribes, i.e. Gond, Bhil, Korku, Baiga, Sahariya, Kol, and Bhariya. From full-sized models of tribal homes made of mud and bamboo to colourful displays of rituals and festivals, you’ll feel like you’re walking through a living, breathing version of their culture. Every gallery tells a story, whether it’s about the tools used in their daily life or their spiritual traditions tied to nature, like the reverence for a banyan tree or the mythical origins of bamboo.
The museum invites you to experience the tribal way of life. Imagine seeing terracotta figures that narrate legends, or sculptures of children playing traditional games like tug-of-war, bringing to life memories of simpler times. And it doesn’t stop there, you can shop for tribal handicrafts at the museum’s ‘Chinhari’ outlet or catch a cultural performance at its amphitheater. You can also flip through the museum’s in-house magazine to get a deeper understanding of the rich traditions of Madhya Pradesh’s tribes.
