A symbol of divine power and devotion

Hampi in Karnataka offers visitors an unforgettable sight: the astounding Monolithic Bull. At an astonishing height of 8 feet, this tall black sculpture known as Yeduru Basavanna or Nandi draws visitors from far and wide to witness its grandeur and uncover its captivating stories. Carved out of one single boulder, this massive work symbolizes power, energy, and strength, holding significance in Hindu mythology. It is an iconic landmark among the Hampi Heritage Monuments and Memorials landmarks, with its majestic stature and intriguing tales!

Tales of wonder and legend

The Monolithic Bull is an iconic representation of Lord Shiva, believed to have been installed by Vijayanagara rulers during the early 16th century. Crafted with extraordinary skill from a single granite block, its majestic height makes it one of Hampi's most photographed and revered monuments. The monolith is shaped in Nandi's form, the bull that was Lord Shiva's divine vehicle and gatekeeper.

The tale of Nandi the Bull's birth is one filled with devotion and divine intervention. Legend has it that Nandi's story began with Sage Shilada's unwavering faith as he hoped for an immortal child. Though his body suffered for decades from termites' attacks while practising rigorous austerities, prayers, and repentance, his dedication remained undiminished. Ultimately Lord Shiva responded with grace by creating Nandi from Shilada's own bones, thus fulfilling his wish for an immortal offspring while simultaneously returning him back to perfect health!
