A sacred riverside haven

Amid the serene Tungabhadra River, in the fortress town of Anegundi, lies the sacred Huchappayana Matha Temple. It’s a divine abode of Lord Virupaksha who is an embodiment of Lord Shiva. With its roots tracing back to the 14th century, the temple was originally established as a place of worship for Shaivites. However, in the 15th century, Saint Vidyaranya transformed it into a Matha, a revered monastic institution for Hindu ascetics.

Today, the temple stands as a profound testament to the rich spiritual heritage of Hampi. Its remarkable black-stone pillars, pavilions, and dance sculptures add an air of mystique to this ancient place of worship.

The tales of the sacred temple

Huchappayana Matha Temple holds deep connections to Vidyaranya, an esteemed philosopher and religious figure who lived during the Vijayanagara Empire's reign. According to a legend, Vidyaranya wrote his famed Advaita Vedanta text 'Panchadasi' within its sacred walls, thereby further strengthening its significance as a spiritual learning centre.

It is believed that this is where Vidyaranya met Harihara and Bukka, the two brothers who later founded the Vijayanagara Empire. Their profound impact ultimately resulted in one of India's greatest empires to be established, endowing this temple with historical significance. Now, Huchappayana Matha Temple remains an oasis for dedicated pilgrims to gather on special religious days and festivals.
