Modern spiritual sanctuary of Lord Shiva

Varanasi always feels less like a city and more like emotion. This feeling deepens when we walk around the majestic complex of New Vishwanath Temple, a religious site standing as a testament to the timeless relevance of Varanasi's spiritual heritage. Located on the campus of Banaras Hindu University, this temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is must-visit, if you are looking for a quieter Vishwanath experience away from main temple’s bustle.

Rooted in Faith, Surrounded by Green

The first thing that will strike you about New Vishwanath Temple is its openness. Away from the narrow, crowded lanes of Varanasi city, this temple offers sense of calmness as you walk through its lush green gardens, wide walkaways and clean stone pathways. The divine energy in the air gently draws you in the embrace of Lord Shiva.

Architecture That Respects the Past

Blending modern design with timeless spiritual essence, the New Vishwanath Temple stands as a masterpiece of sacred architecture. Built primarily of radiant marble and rising to an impressive height of 77 meters, its towering shikhara is among the tallest temple spires in the world. The temple complex beautifully combines sandstone buildings, carved pillars, balconies, pavilions, and finely designed spires that reflect traditional temple style while still feeling calm and welcoming. Along the corridors, small shrines, murals, and inscriptions tell the long spiritual story of Kashi. Sculptures of bulls, lions, crocodiles, and other symbolic animals decorate the temple grounds. Large, strong pillars will lead you to a well-designed and graceful hall. The marble walls are engraved with verses from the Bhagavad Gita and other holy scriptures, turning the temple into a place of living spiritual knowledge. The idol of Lord Shiva, placed in a marble sanctum on the upper floor, shines with divine beauty and will leave you awestruck.

History and Spiritual Significance

The New Vishwanath Temple is deeply rooted in history and devotion. The original Shri Kashi Vishwanath Mandir faced repeated destruction and reconstruction during the Mughal period, prompting the visionary educationist Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya to dream of building a replica within the Banaras Hindu University campus. In 1931, the Birla family undertook this monumental task and laid the foundation of the temple. After 35 years of dedicated effort, the grand structure was completed in 1966. Though primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple houses nine other shrines within its complex and warmly welcomes people of all faiths. Rich in symbolism, it reflects the core values of Hindu philosophy, highlighting Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha, and Karma. The New Vishwanath Temple thus stands not only as a place of worship but also as a powerful representation of Hinduism’s spiritual, moral, and humanistic ideals.
