Where India's destiny was shaped

Are you someone who’s always curious about how prominent historical figures or politicians lived? Well, there's a place in Prayagraj that takes you back in time while offering insight into one of the country's most influential families. Welcome to Anand Bhawan (abode of joy), a historic house museum where the first prime minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru once lived.

Built in the 1930s by his father Motilal Nehru, Anand Bhawan served as the residence of the Nehru family when Swaraj Bhawan, their palatial mansion in the same premises became the headquarters of the Indian National Congress.

Come, let's peel back the layers of time and discover how a family's home became the cradle of a nation's destiny!

Into the lives of the Nehru family

The tour of Anand Bhawan unfolds like chapters of a captivating novel, with every part revealing a new facet of the Nehru saga. Among the many exhibits, you can find Jawaharlal Nehru's room, where a simple charpoy (a light bedstead) stands in stark contrast to a collection of books lining the shelves.

Move further, and you will find the dining room that invites you to imagine the dinner table conversations of a room full of influential people. And you just can’t miss the picture gallery that offers a glimpse into the Nehru family's storied past. Black and white photographs line the walls, capturing both historic moments and intimate family scenes. Here, you'll see Jawaharlal Nehru with national leaders, Motilal Nehru's commanding presence, and candid shots of the family at leisure.

When you step out of the historic halls of Anand Bhawan, a futuristic dome catches your eye. This is the Jawahar Planetarium. Enter inside and take your seat to watch a breathtaking canvas of stars, planets, and swirling galaxies.

A living legacy of India's freedom struggle

Before you bid farewell to Anand Bhawan, remember that it isn't just a house museum but a silent witness to the ebb and flow of India's tumultuous journey to freedom. In 1931, its halls echoed with grief as it hosted Motilal Nehru's funeral. But even in sorrow, Anand Bhawan pulsed with the promise of a new dawn. For within these walls, architects of colonial resistance as well as the leaders of a new democracy, found shelter and inspiration.
