Step into history and beauty

The charm of India lies in going off the beaten track to enjoy quiet and green surroundings brimming with history. One such place is the Bhadrachalam Hills in the Kothagudem district, rising above the Godavari River in Telangana.

Bhadrachalam is known for its antiquity and rich spiritual significance, drawing you to its revered Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy Temple, built in the 17th century AD. It lies in the Dandakaranya forest, once a part of the town, with a clearly documented history of Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana walking the paths here during their exile. Imagine following their footsteps!

Experience the traditions and rituals of the people at the Ram Navami festival (held every year in March-April), which is celebrated here with great fervour, re-enacting episodes from the Ramayana. The temple itself is an architectural marvel, with intricate carvings and inscriptions that hold centuries of history within its walls.

Home of Sita and Rama in exile

If you’re looking for spiritual solace, explore the temples of Bhadrachalam district. Located about 35 kilometres away, Parnasala brings history alive! It is said to be the place where Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana lived during their exile. It is where Rama slayed many rakshasas (demons), including Maricha Rakshasa when he came in disguise as a golden deer to deceive Sita. You can also visit Sita Vaagu, the stream where it is believed Sita used to take her bath. You will be fascinated by the beautifully carved statues and monuments here that depict events from the Ramayana. Just two kilometres away lies Yetapaka, where the bird Jatayu, a devotee of Rama tried to stop Ravana from kidnapping Sita. A wing of the bird was believed to have fallen here in the fierce battle that ensued.

A riverside experience on the Godavari

Take a boat ride on the sacred Godavari River that flows by Bhadrachalam, to see amazing views of the temple and the town. The river is also central to local culture and traditions, serving as the site of various religious ceremonies during festivals. If you’re simply wishing to unwind in a peaceful natural setting, the riverside has many lovely spots for a quiet picnic.
