Marbat Festival: Banishing evil, embracing unity
Nagpur's Marbat Festival offers a spectacular spectacle every August or September. This extraordinary tradition involves creating and parading Marbat effigies to represent vanquishing malevolent spirits, lighting up the night sky with their flames to symbolise good over evil and celebrate this triumphant festival of unity over hatred. Beyond its visual splendour, however, this festival also bears historical significance, having once served as a platform to voice opposition against colonial rulers while raising social issues that needed attention.
