The uniqueness of Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum lies not only in being the oldest museum in Mumbai but also through showcasing a rare collection of fine and decorative arts that define India and Bombay of yore. Established in 1872, it was originally known as the Victoria and Albert Museum. It was later renamed in honour of Dr. Bhau Daji Lad, a renowned scholar and social reformer. The Museum houses a permanent collection of miniature clay models, dioramas, maps, lithographs, photographs, and rare books documenting Mumbai people’s lives and the city’s history from the late 18th century to the early 20th century. And since the founding of the Museum Trust in 2003, this museum has been added to its permanent collection. Through this acquisition, it provides a comprehensive representation of the city’s art and culture since the 19th century, including contemporary art. It also hosts exhibitions year-round, giving a platform to artists of all stature.
