Where Rivers Meet the Sea and Migratory Wings Find Refuge

Located along the serene estuary of the Kadalundi River at its confluence with the Arabian Sea, Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is a tranquil haven for birdwatchers, nature lovers, and slow travellers. Located near Kozhikode (Calicut) in Kerala, this coastal wetland offers an intimate encounter with nature in one of South India’s most peaceful ecosystems.

Spanning a cluster of small islands surrounded by mangroves, mudflats, and shallow waters, the sanctuary is a living testament to Kerala’s rich biodiversity and sustainable coexistence with nature.

Plan an early morning visit to the sanctuary for birdwatching, followed by a cultural and culinary exploration of Kozhikode in the afternoon.

A Sanctuary for Wings from Across the World

Every year, particularly during the winter months from November to April, Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary comes alive as a vibrant resting and feeding ground for migratory birds arriving from regions as distant as Central Asia, Europe, and Siberia. The sanctuary supports remarkable avian diversity, with over 100 species of resident birds and around 60 species of migratory birds, making it a prized destination for ornithologists, birdwatchers, and photography enthusiasts. Visitors can commonly spot terns and gulls skimming the waters, sandpipers and plovers foraging along the mudflats, as well as herons, egrets, cormorants, whimbrels, curlews, and stilts. The rhythmic ebb and flow of the tides create a constantly changing estuarine habitat rich in fish and crustaceans, providing an abundant and reliable food source that sustains the sanctuary’s thriving birdlife.

Landscapes of Quiet Beauty

Kadalundi’s charm lies in its unspoiled simplicity. Mangrove forests line the riverbanks, shallow sandbars emerge with the retreating tide, and coconut palms sway gently against the coastal breeze. The interplay of river, sea, and sky creates ever changing vistas that invite quiet reflection.

Unlike large, commercial wildlife parks, the sanctuary offers a calm, low impact nature experience, ideal for travellers seeking peace and authenticity.

Visitors are encouraged to maintain silence near bird habitats, avoid littering, and remain on designated paths to minimize disturbance to the wildlife. Respecting local guidelines and ongoing conservation efforts is essential to safeguarding the fragile estuarine ecosystem. Such conscious practices play a vital role in preserving the sanctuary’s delicate natural balance, ensuring that it continues to serve as a safe haven for birds and a place of quiet discovery for generations to come.
