A timeless treasure on an island

The Lakhota Palace Museum, built on the waters of Ranmal Lake in Jamnagar, Gujarat, has a fascinating blend of history, architecture, and culture. Built in 1846 by Jam Shri Ranmalji, this Jal Durga (water fort) was initially constructed for drought relief and later served as both a defence stronghold and a leisure palace for the rulers. Its Rajput-style architecture and Iranian design influences sets it apart. The palace's name is linked to Lakhaji, a ruler of Nawanagar, and the ‘1 lakh koris’ (currency of the era) reportedly spent on its construction.

Immerse yourself in stories and splendour

Housed within this building is the Archaeological Museum, originally established in 1946 and connecting visitors with the rich cultural legacy of Jamnagar. The museum’s 11 galleries showcase 321 exhibits that span the 9th to 19th centuries, offering a glimpse into the Princely State of Nawanagar. The collection includes stone and bronze sculptures, miniature paintings, coins, textiles, natural history specimens, and royal arsenals.

Rebirth after restoration

The palace faced significant damage during the 2001 earthquake, but thanks to the joint efforts of the Gujarat State Archaeological Department and the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation, it was meticulously restored and reopened in May 2018. Today, this monument stands as a protected site under the Gujarat State Government.
