A gift to humanity

Located about 22 kilometres north of Udalguri town, Bhairabkunda lies at the tri-junction of Bhutan, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh. This picturesque picnic spot is considered God’s gift to humanity. Its unique location, where the Jampani River (originating from Bhutan) and the Bhairabi River merge to form the Dhanshiri River (a major tributary of the Brahmaputra), adds to its mystique. Imagine standing at the meeting point of these life-giving waters—a place where nature unites across borders.

The benevolent fishes of the kunda

According to proverbial tales, there existed a sacred kunda (pond) where devotees would offer their prayers. Within its waters swam mystical fishes. These aquatic beings, touched by the devotion of the faithful, would accept the rice offerings and, in return, sprinkle holy water for peace. Interestingly, these celestial fish would avoid impure individuals, emphasizing the sanctity of the place.

A spiritual aura

Geographically located in Bhutan but near Bhairabkunda town, the Shiva Mandir draws devotees throughout the year. Pilgrims seek blessings and spiritual solace here. The temple’s significance transcends boundaries, making it an essential pilgrimage site for Indian visitors. Whether you arrive seeking divine intervention or simply to soak in the tranquil vibes, the Shiva Mandir leaves an indelible mark on the soul.

The gethsemane man-made forest

Within Bhairabkunda lies the Gethsemane Man-Made Forest, nurtured entirely by a local Joint Forest Management Committee (JFMC) comprising of 35 dedicated members. With over 14 lakh trees spanning 35 varieties, this forest thrives across more than 6 square kilometres. Visitors can witness a diverse array of animals, birds, and reptiles within its green embrace. The forest stands as a testament to community effort and ecological stewardship.

Nearby attractions

Arunachal pradesh and Bhutan: Both Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan are easily accessible from Bhairabkunda. You can explore these neighbouring regions by foot and experience their unique culture and natural beauty.

Hornbill festival (Nagaland): While not exactly in Bhairabkunda, the Hornbill Festival held in Nagaland during the first week of December is a vibrant celebration known as the “Festival of Festivals.” It’s a great opportunity to immerse yourself in Naga culture and festivities.

Kaziranga National Park: Although not right next to Bhairabkunda, Kaziranga National Park is relatively close. Consider taking an elephant or jeep safari to witness the incredible wildlife, including the famous one-horned rhinoceros.
