Birthed by an earthquake

Lying at the foot of the Garo Hills surrounded by Assam and Meghalaya, Chandubi Lake stands as a serene natural wonder, in contrast to its birth by a powerful earthquake in 1897. Located in the Kamrup district, this picturesque lake is surrounded by dense forests, tea gardens, and quaint villages. The absence of pollution ensures crystal-clear waters, making it a haven for migratory birds during winter.

Every name tells a story or two

Earthquake legend: One legend traces the name back to its powerful beginnings when the earthquake struck. As the earth trembled, five hilly mountains in the region sank into the ground, leaving the locals awestruck. From this remarkable phenomenon emerged the serene expanse we now know as Chandubi Lake. The very name “Chandubi” is a blend of two Khasi words: Chand, meaning “five”, and Dubi, meaning “sinking”.

Merchant’s legend
Another intriguing legend weaves around a renowned merchant named Chanda Sadasgar. He utilized the lake as a transit point for transporting his merchandise to the neighbouring state of Meghalaya, navigating the waters to reach the Kulsi River. Over time, the lake became synonymous with his name.

The natural lagoon

The lake’s chief feature is its natural lagoon, formed within its waters. Visitors can indulge in fishing or rowing, immersing themselves in the serene beauty of Chandubi Lake.
