A revered sanctuary in Ooty

Explore Ooty's Mariamman Temple, dedicated to the revered local deity Goddess Mariamman. Interestingly, the temple is dedicated to both Mariamman and Kaliamman. There is an interesting local tradition behind this. The story goes that some merchants sighted two sisters, clearly of noble stature, here. They asked for a place to stay and when the merchants replied, they vanished in a flash. The merchants realised that they had been granted a vision of goddesses Mariamman and Kaliamman. Therefore the locals built a temple for both of them on the same site.

A tale of two sisters

The Mariamman Temple is associated with an intriguing legend. According to this tale, traders from Coimbatore would convene every Tuesday to engage in commerce with tribal communities in the area. However, one fateful Tuesday brought an extraordinary occurrence as two sisters rushed through the bustling market. These siblings exuded a divine aura, apparent in both their appearance and demeanour, prompting locals to advise them to take refuge beneath a nearby tree.

What unfolded that night was truly remarkable—a sudden burst of lightning or a brilliant flash of light illuminated the area, casting its radiance upon everything in its vicinity. In the wake of this incredible event, the enigmatic sisters had completely disappeared, leading people to realise that they were celestial beings. As a token of their reverence, a temple was erected in honour of Goddess Kaliamman and Mariamman, commemorating this magical encounter.
