Unravelling the tale of divine grace

As you wander the sacred grounds of Mata Matha, you'll be delighted by its stories of divine grace that have endured through time. Legends and tales tell a compelling narrative. Mata Matha takes its name from Sachi Devi, an esteemed figure who abandoned worldly matters to devote herself solely to serving Lord Krishna. One encounter with Ganga Devi led her directly to Puri and its hallowed lotus feet of Jagannath Swami where she found comfort from his pujaris. Dreams depicting Lord Jagannath appearing before King Ajaidev and Chief Pujari and instructing them to release Sachi Devi and seek her initiation were frequent. Sachi Devi, now commonly referred to as Ganga Mata Goswamini, persuaded a Brahmin community member to present Shri Shyama Raya as a gift that would shape her future. Gangamata Goswamini had an exquisite divine vision that led to her revamp of Shri Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya's ancient structure, later designated Shri Shyama Raya by consecration of Shri Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya - an enduring religious site on Sweta Ganga founded by Sachidevi herself and eventually known as Ganga Mata Matha or Sachidevi Matha - an oasis of spirituality.
