A tapestry of legends
As per Legend, Lord Hanuman was responsible for guarding Puri against the the seawaters. However, he left for Ayodhya to eat ladoos (sweet) without informing Lord Jagannath. Meanwhile, the sea water entered Puri and considerably damaged the Jagannath Temple. Lord Jagannath asked Lord Hanuman’s about his unscheduled visit to Ayodhya and tied his hands and feet with a rope with instructions to guard against the seawater, earning it its affectionate moniker of "Bedi Hanuman", or Chained Hanuman. It is since then believed that since then sea water has never entered Puri and reached till the Jagannath Temple.
Within the temple lies a sacred rock bearing what many consider an auspicious imprint from Lord Hanuman's feet, drawing many devotees who come here in prayerful reverence as an auspicious site blessed by divine power.

Puri Beach Festival, held annually in November, features events such as sand art competitions, fashion shows, performances by local musicians and dancers as well as performances by internationally-acclaimed dancers from India's Konark Dance Festival which takes place annually in December to showcase traditional Odishan and regional forms of dance.
