Where millennia-old fossils lie hidden

Into the mysterious subterranean realm

The subterranean world is an intriguing realm to venture into; you never know what kind of wonders await. A mystical cavern that leads to this realm lies hidden in Meghalaya’s beautiful region of Sohra (Cherrapunjee).

Venture into the depths of Arwah Cave, also known as Krem Arwah, where a mesmerizing display of limestone formations, hidden waterfalls, and a thriving ecosystem flourish within.

This cave is famous for its fossils, which are showcased with lit-up interiors, especially towards the end of the cave. Arwah Cave is an impressive geological masterpiece created over millennia by Mother Nature. When you step inside, you will be amazed by stalactites, stalagmites, columns and other splendid speleothems adorning its interior. Each formation displays stunning geological artistry visible only to those daring enough to explore its depths. Even the path leading towards the cave is aesthetically pleasing as it is carved out of vegetation!

But there’s more to this amazing geological marvel. Within its dim and humid environs, an extraordinary variety of life thrives without direct sunlight - bats, spiders and other cave-dwellers. Come and witness firsthand the unparalleled beauty tucked beneath the earth's surface.

Tips for your underground adventure

Before entering the cave, it's important to wear comfortable clothing and sturdy, mud-friendly shoes, as caves can be cold and damp. To keep warm while exploring the labyrinthine tunnels, it's recommended to bring a lightweight jumper or jacket. Don't forget to carry a torch or headlamp for illumination in dimly lit areas, along with snacks and beverages to keep you energized throughout the journey.

While exploring, be sure to stay on approved trails and follow safety advice provided by guides or tour operators to preserve the delicate cave formations and ensure a secure trip. While capturing the stunning beauty and enchanting surroundings of the cave with your camera, it's important to limit flash use to protect its fragile ecosystem.

A maze of tunnels and limestone formations

Prepare to be astonished as Arwah Cave unveils its labyrinthine wonders – a mesmerizing maze where every turn leads to new discoveries. One moment, you'll find yourself traversing beneath lofty cave ceilings, only to gracefully slide through narrow passageways into uncharted realms the next. What’s even more amazing is that the underwater streams you find here have continued to flow through these ancient cave formations for millennia.

The cave is also an important part of the expansive limestone belt of Meghalaya, extending between the Khasi and Jaintia Hills. But amidst the captivating limestone formations, adventurers and explorers have discovered an extraordinary array of fossils here - everything from preserved crustacean shells and fish bones. Fascinating, right?
