The Maharaja’s collection

While venturing into the sprawling Lakshmi Vilas Palace Estate of Vadodara, a haven of artefacts lies hidden within. Step into the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum, a treasure trove proudly showcases an exquisite selection of paintings from both European and Indian artists, prominently featuring a remarkable collection of works by the illustrious Raja Ravi Varma. These masterpieces were commissioned by the Maharaja of Baroda, reflecting the artistic taste and cultural patronage of the time. Raja Ravi Varma is especially celebrated for his captivating portrayals rooted in Hindu mythology, and the museum displays several of these iconic pieces. Alongside these mythological masterpieces, you can also find striking portraits that capture the grandeur of the Royal family.

A world of exquisite masterpieces

In addition to the stunning paintings, you will discover marble and bronze statues, showcasing not only original works by acclaimed artists but also exquisite bronze reproductions of some of the most famous masterpieces, lovingly ordered by the Maharaja himself. Among the commissioned artists is the renowned Italian sculptor Fellicci, whose breathtaking creations embellish both the interiors of the Museum and the Lakshmi Vilas Palace. Moreover, the museum features an oriental gallery, which houses a diverse collection of sculptures and artefacts from China and Japan. Each item invites you to explore the intricate connections between art, history, and the royal patronage that brought these magnificent works to life.
