Where the divine feminine’s toe fell

At the breathtaking summit of Pavagadh Hill near Vadodara, 800 meters above sea level, lies a sacred gem steeped in history and spirituality: the Mahakali Temple.

This ancient shrine, dating back to the 10th-11th centuries, has long been a revered destination for Hindu pilgrims, drawing faithful visitors to its hallowed grounds long before the bustling city of Champaner took shape. It continues to attract seekers and devotees to this day, a testament to its enduring legacy. Part of the picturesque UNESCO World Heritage Site, Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, the temple is one of the 51 Great Shakti Peethas, making it a pivotal site for followers of the divine feminine. Legend has it that the toe of Devi Sati fell at this site, and at that moment, Maa Mahakali manifested here.

Come and experience the spiritual aura and rich heritage of this extraordinary temple!

Ascend to the mystical shrine

If you plan to journey to the summit temple on foot, prepare yourself for an adventurous 5 km trek along a vibrant jungle footpath. But if you're in the mood for a less strenuous ascent, hop onto the cable car that whisks you away from the last accessible road point, providing a thrilling ride with stunning panoramic views!

As you arrive at the temple, the grand fortifications and the expansive chowk greet you, where sacrifices were once honoured at two altars glimmering with lights. The moment you step into the inner sanctum, you'll be captivated by the striking idol of Kalika Mata depicted in the form of the mukhwato - a head painted in an eye-catching red. Surrounding her are the full-fledged idols of Mahakali and the intriguing yantras of Bahuchara, all contributing to the temple's mystical allure.

Pilgrims from near and far flock to this sacred site, and thankfully, the temple remains open from the crack of dawn till late at night, ensuring everyone can partake in its divine energy. Intriguingly, the temple complex is a blend of cultures- while the ground floor boasts Hindu shrines, the striking domed spire houses a Muslim shrine. This shrine is dedicated to Sadan Shah Pir, a Sufi saint whose spiritual presence adds an enchanting layer to the site. After an impressive redevelopment in 2022, the shrine was skilfully relocated, and a new dazzling spire was built.
