Monument touching the skies

The picturesque backdrop of the Satpura and Vindhyachal hills, the commanding view of the Narmada River, and the sprawling expanse of the Sardar Sarovar Dam. At a towering height of 182 meters, the Statue of Unity in Vadodara is a monument that has no parallel in the world.

A homage to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who served as the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of independent India, the statue stands as a symbol of national pride. Its expression, posture, and stance aptly reflect Patel's dignified yet determined persona, with his head held high, draped in a shawl, and hands poised as if ready to stride forward.

Within the statue, an in-house museum provides detailed insights into the construction process and the remarkable legacy of Sardar Patel. Come and be a witness to the world’s tallest statue in India as it transcends its physical dimensions and stands for unity, strength, and progress—a fitting tribute to one of India’s most revered statesmen.

The thought behind the colossal design

The project, initially unveiled in 2010, commenced construction in October 2013. On 31 October 2018, coinciding with the 143rd anniversary of Patel's birth, the statue was inaugurated.

The design of the Statue of Unity, masterminded by Indian sculptor Ram V. Sutar, was meticulously developed following a thorough study of statues honoring Patel nationwide. It is an enlarged iteration of a statue of the leader located at the Ahmedabad International Airport.

The statue incorporates Patel's traditional dhoti-clad legs and sandaled feet, resulting in a tapered base. To ensure structural stability, two 250-tonne tuned mass dampers were incorporated into the design.

The statue is engineered to withstand winds of up to 180 kilometers per hour and earthquakes registering 6.5 on the Richter scale, occurring within a depth of 10 kilometers and a radius of 12 kilometers from the statue's location.

The 182-meter height of the statue was deliberately chosen to align with the number of seats in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, underscoring its symbolic significance.

Explore the inside…

The Statue of Unity is divided into five zones, with only three accessible to the public. The first zone, from the base to Patel's shins, features three levels housing the exhibition area, mezzanine, roof, memorial garden, and museum. The museum showcases Patel's life and contributions, accompanied by a 15-minute audio-visual presentation.

The second zone extends up to Patel's thighs, while the third zone leads to the viewing gallery at a height of 153 meters. Concrete towers within the statue's legs house two elevators each, capable of carrying 26 people at a time. Ascending to the viewing gallery takes just over 30 seconds, with the gallery accommodating up to 200 visitors. From this vantage point, marvel at the sinuous path of the Narmada River, bordered by the imposing Sardar Sarovar Dam. In the distance, the majestic Vindhyachal and Satpura Hill ranges form a stunning backdrop. Below, the Valley of Flowers unfolds like a vibrant tapestry, completing the picturesque panorama.

The fourth zone serves as the maintenance area, while the final zone encompasses the head and shoulders of the statue.
