Krishnagiri: The Mango Capital of Tamil Nadu
The Krishnagiri district sits at the confluence of the Eastern Ghats and the Deccan Plateau, blessed with a soil and climate uniquely suited to mango cultivation. The native varieties of mangoes grown in the state include Banganapalli, Neelum, Rumani, Mulgoa, Alphonso, and Senthura — and every year in the months of June and July, the Krishnagiri district hosts the Mango Festival to highlight the various varieties harvested. The district is among Tamil Nadu's largest mango-producing regions, and the festival is a direct celebration of the farmers, growers, and traders who sustain this tradition.
A festival for all the senses
The festival transforms Denkanikottai into a mango lover's paradise — stalls overflow with dozens of varieties, from the fibre-free Alphonso to the golden Neelum; competitions reward the biggest, most fragrant, and most unusual mangoes; and cooking demonstrations showcase the versatility of the fruit, from pickles and juices to curries and desserts. Cultural programmes, folk performances, and handicraft exhibitions run alongside the mango displays, making this as much a celebration of Krishnagiri's cultural identity as its agricultural one.
