India's grand cattle carnival

Welcome to the Sonepur Cattle Fair, an extravaganza that ranks as one of Asia's largest cattle fairs. Held at the confluence of the mighty Ganga and Gandak rivers, this month-long festival is a mesmerising blend of spirituality, commerce, and culture. Yes, you will find a host of animals being traded here. But you are sure to be fascinated with the endless variety of folk performances, amusement rides, handicraft stalls, and religious ceremonies here. Taking place on the auspicious Kartik Purnima in November, it draws Hindu devotees for sacred dips in the holy river and prayers at the Harihar Nath Temple.

A unique blend of cultural traditions and trade

The Sonepur Cattle Fair, known locally as Sonepur Mela, is a testament to India's rich culture and spiritual heritage. This grand event occurs during Kartik Poornima, the full moon night in the month of November. For Hindus, it's a profoundly auspicious time, marked by holy rituals and prayers.

As you delve into the heart of rural India here, you'll witness a unique spectacle where cultural traditions blend with trade, creating an unforgettable experience. Join thousands of visitors from around the world who gather here to not only trade cattle but to celebrate life, spirituality, and the vibrant Indian culture.

While the fair is renowned for trading livestock, it's much more than a cattle market. The fair's allure lies in its ability to seamlessly blend commerce with culture, making it a vibrant and dynamic event.

Deeply rooted in legend and history

The Sonepur Cattle Fair is deeply rooted in history, tracing its origins to the era of Emperor Chandragupta Maurya, who sourced elephants and horses from here for his army. Today, it stands as a symbol of India's enduring traditions.

One of the legends associated with the fair commemorates Lord Vishnu's intervention to end a great curse and a long battle between Gaj (elephant) and Grah (crocodile), symbolising the forest and water.

A carnival of spirituality and entertainment

The fair's cultural significance extends beyond trade, as it presents a carnival of spirituality and entertainment. Street magicians, religious gurus, and pilgrims converge to create a vivid and lively atmosphere. Visitors can explore snack stalls, handicrafts, amusement rides, and circus performances, providing a glimpse into the diverse facets of Indian culture.
