About the Festival

The Mahabodhi Festival is celebrated every year on the last Sunday of November at Sanchi in Raisen district, one of the world’s renowned Buddhist pilgrimage destinations and an important tourist attraction of Madhya Pradesh. The festival was first organized in 1952, and the inaugural celebration was attended by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Since then, this historic tradition has continued annually with great devotion and enthusiasm. The festival commemorates the rich Buddhist heritage of Sanchi and attracts devotees, scholars, and tourists from India and abroad.

Festival Highlights & Cultural Experience

The Mahabodhi Festival offers a unique blend of spirituality, culture, and tradition. The celebrations begin with Buddhist religious ceremonies, prayers, and rituals that reflect the teachings and philosophy of Lord Buddha. Visitors also get an opportunity to experience the vibrant folk culture of Madhya Pradesh through cultural performances, traditional music, dance programs, exhibitions, and local fairs. The festival creates a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere while promoting cultural exchange among domestic and international visitors.

The festival is organized under the joint aegis of the Mahabodhi Society of Sri Lanka, Sanchi Center, and the Government of Madhya Pradesh on the occasion of the anniversary of Chetiyagiri Vihar at Sanchi. This grand event plays an important role in promoting Buddhist tourism and showcasing the historical and spiritual significance of Sanchi at the global level. The Mahabodhi Festival not only strengthens cultural and religious ties but also highlights Madhya Pradesh as a major destination for heritage and spiritual tourism.
