Foundation and Cultural Significance
RIWATCH was founded with the vision of empowering indigenous communities through cultural preservation and research-driven development. Over the years, it has emerged as a leading institution in Northeast India, collaborating with universities, research bodies, and community organisations to promote ecological sustainability and socio-cultural awareness.
The institute is guided by a council of scholars and experts, with leadership that includes internationally recognised academic figures. Its work bridges traditional knowledge with modern research, highlighting the importance of indigenous cultures in shaping sustainable futures.
Campus and Research Environment
Spread across a tranquil campus away from urban noise, RIWATCH functions as a dynamic research and learning centre. It facilitates field studies for students pursuing higher education, including M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. programmes, and hosts international academic collaborations such as study-abroad programmes.
The institute also serves as a recognised centre for education in sustainable development, with affiliations to reputed universities in India and abroad. Its environment offers researchers and visitors a rare opportunity to engage with living cultural traditions in their natural setting.
RIWATCH Ethnographic Museum
Established in 2017, the RIWATCH Museum is one of the most unique ethnographic museums in Northeast India. Often described as a “people’s museum,” it houses an extensive collection of artifacts generously contributed by local communities.
The museum is divided into three major sections:
- Arunachal Pradesh Gallery
- Northeast India Gallery
- International Understanding Gallery (developing)
Rather than merely displaying objects, the museum presents a narrative-driven experience, showcasing folklore, traditions, and cultural connections across indigenous communities worldwide. It emphasises the concept of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”—the idea that the world is one family—by highlighting shared values and common cultural threads among different societies.
With thoughtfully curated exhibits, storytelling displays, and rare collections, the museum offers an engaging and educational experience for visitors of all backgrounds.
Facilities and Contributions
RIWATCH houses several specialised centres and facilities that support its mission like Ethnographic Museum, Documentation Centre, Herbal Garden and traditional healing practices, Centre for Mother Languages, Library and research archives, and Research cottages for visiting scholars.
The institute actively supports research through fellowships, internships, and collaborations with organisations such as TISS, Azim Premji Foundation, and other academic institutions. It also produces documentaries, books, and publications that document the rich cultural heritage of Northeast India.
Notably, its efforts have contributed to cultural recognition initiatives, such as securing a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Idu Mishmi textiles, reinforcing the cultural identity of local communities.
