Samten Yongcha Monastery

One of Mechukha’s major attractions is the 400-year old Samten Yongcha Gompa (Old Gompa). Located on a hilltop on the westernmost part of Mechukha, offering a bird’s panoramic view of the pristine Mechukha town and the picturesque mountains on the far side.

The wooden monastery belonging to the Mahayana Buddhist sect has a collection of ancient scripts and statues. The two-storeyed gompa is colourful in its imagery with its guardian deities, colourful costumes and masks created for folklore figures. Festivals like Losar are celebrated here.

Note: Considering long journey hours along mountain roads, it is advisable to avoid night travel; pack sufficient snacks, water and comfortable clothing keeping in mind dipping tempertures.

Travel For LiFE Awareness Launched

An awareness program for encouraging local tourism industry stakeholders to be part of the Govt. of India’s Travel For LiFE program was conducted at Mechukha in December. District Tourism Officer-Shi Yomi District, Ms. Rita Yorung conducted the program.

Travel For LiFE is a program under ‘Mission LiFE’, introduced by Prime Minister Sri. Narendra Modi at COP26 at Glasgow. Mission for Lifestyle for Environment is a global mass movement led by India urging individuals and communities to act for protection of the environment against the effects of the climate change.

Cleanliness Drive Organised

A cleanliness drive under ‘Swadesh Darshan 2.0’ was organised in Mechukha by the Tourism Department of Arunachal Pradesh. The drive is aimed at creating awareness among local residents on the importance of keeping cities clean. This assumes significance in the context of Mechukha being developed and promoted as a tourism destination under Swadesh Darshan scheme. As more tourists are being attracted to the mesmerising hill country destination, it is important to guard against pollution that may hinder the destination’s progress in this regard.

Mechukha-based 20th Bn ITBP officers and jawans participated in the drive,organised in collaboration with the tourism stakeholders of the region.
