Birding Hotspot in the Eastern Himalayas

Situated in the Himalayan foothill of West Kameng district in Arunachal Pradesh, Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary is a place where nature feels alive, curious and full of surprises. Named after the Red Eagle Division of the Indian army, the sanctuary is renowned for its rich birdlife, offering diverse species in significant numbers. It connects naturally with Sessa Orchid Sanctuary and Pakke Tiger Reserve, creating a vast ecological corridor.

For birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and slow travelers, Eaglenest is nothing short of magic. Photographers are especially drawn to its raw, untouched beauty. Soft forest light, mist-laden mornings, vibrant birds, rare butterflies, and pristine landscapes create perfect conditions for storytelling through the lens. Whether capturing a rare owl at dawn or a sunbird darting through blossoms, every moment here feels intimate and unforgettable.

A Paradise for Bird Lovers

Spread over an area of 217 sq km of lush, high-altitude forest; Eaglenest is rated as one of the top birding destinations in the world. Over 500 bird species have been recorded here, and the list keeps growing.

The sanctuary gained global fame with the discovery of the Bugun Liocichla in 2006. Named after the local Bugun tribe, the discovery of this rare bird, which is found nowhere else on Earth, put Eaglenest firmly on the world birding map.

As you walk its forest trails, you may spot Tragopans like Blyth’s and Temminck’s, the elegant Ward’s Trogon, Mrs. Gould’s Sunbird, Flycatchers, laughing thrushes, barbets, parrotbills, warblers, and babblers in astonishing variety. Sometimes, all it takes is standing still; the forest rewards patience.

A World within One Sanctuary

One of Eaglenest’s most unique features is its huge elevational range, stretching from 500 to 3,250 meters. This means that within a single sanctuary, you experience Subtropical forests, Dense evergreen woods and Cool temperate habitats. Each altitude brings its own birds, animals, and landscapes. It feels like traveling through different worlds on one journey.

While birds steal the spotlight, Eaglenest is also home to an impressive range of wildlife. The sanctuary is part of the Kameng Elephant Reserve and supports mammals such as Bengal Tiger, Clouded Leopard, Red Panda, Gaur, Arunachal Macaque and Endangered Capped Langur. Reptiles, amphibians, and butterflies thrive here too, with over 160 butterfly species have been recorded.

When Nature Meets Culture

The Eaglenest Bird Festival, which is held annually, brings together birders, scientists, photographers, and local communities. Declared as an annual state government event since 2022, this festival is about learning, conservation, and celebrating the deep bond between people and forests.

Walking these trails with local guides, you realize that Eaglenest is protected not only by laws, but also by the pride and care of its people.

Best time to Visit

The best time to observe birds at Eaglenest is during March and April. Since the sanctuary attracts many visitors during this period, it is recommended to book accommodation or camps well in advance. The sanctuary remains closed to the public during the monsoon season, from June to September.
