Architectural Grace Amidst the Mountains
Painted in vibrant hues of red, yellow and white, Bomdila Monastery beautifully incorporates elements of traditional Tibetan architecture adapted to the Himalayan environment. The intricately designed prayer halls with Buddha statues, carved windows, mandala patterns adorning the walls, fluttering prayer flags along with mural and wall hangings very well reflect Buddhist culture and art.
The complex of the Monastery has been divided into three Gompas -Upper, Middle, and Lower. Lying on the hill is Upper Gompa standing as a symbol of the traditions associated with Buddhism. It houses a school that educated monk kids along with a temple of Buddha and a prayer hall.
Then there is Middle Gompa which is situated close to the main market in Bomdila. Regarded as one among the oldest Gompas, it houses the revered Blue Medicine Buddha who is believed to have healing powers.
Located at the centre of Bomdila Monastery is Lower Gompa which has a huge prayer hall perfect for peaceful meditation. The influence of Tibetan architecture is prominent in this Gompa.
