The iron bridge of Tawang

Imagine standing on a swaying bridge, breathing in the crisp mountain air. Refreshing right?

If you’re looking for an experience like this, then Tawang has something special for you! Step on to the Chushul Chakzam, an extraordinary iron bridge that seems to dance over the roaring Yarlung Tsangpo River. Come explore this remarkable feat of engineering which was built in 1430 by the innovative Thang Tong Gyalpo, a great Buddhist adept. Chushul Chakzam is one of the last surviving Tibetan bridges in the region, daring adventurers to cross a stretch of about 100 meters!

As you walk across this 600-year-old structure, you will be surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Himalayas, with prayer flags fluttering in the wind. The bridge, which translates to "iron bridge" in Tibetan, has withstood the test of time. However, you will notice that modern additions, such as a safety net underneath, have been installed to ensure safe passage.

Join us as we dive into the fascinating story of this iconic bridge!

Begin a daring adventure

When you arrive at the bridge, take a moment to enjoy the stunning views that surround you! You’ll be amidst the majestic mountains, which are truly breathtaking. Afterwards, you'll need to make your way down the steep steps to reach the iron bridge. On this bridge, you will find a stupa at either end crossing over the Tawang Chu River.

If you take a closer look at the first stupa, you’ll see the year it was built, and on the floor, there are two iron chains on either side. These chains are what suspend the bridge in the air, which is quite remarkable considering that only two chains seem to hold the entire structure together! During your walk, you’ll notice woven wooden panels on top of the two chains that allow you to cross the bridge. And once you begin crossing, you’ll need to commit to completing the entire walk!
