A monument of grandeur
Do not be amazed at the sheer magnificence of Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple. Towering high above the city, its seven-storied Rajagopuram with an altitude of 50 metres greets visitors as you step through its eastern entrance. Decorated with intricate carvings depicting scenes from Ramayana as well as portraits of Matla Anantharaja and his wives (Matla Anantharaja is Matla Anantaraja's name in Sanskrit) this architectural marvel unveils ancient craftsmen from ancient artisans all around. As soon as you enter, be greeted by Lord Vishnu in yoga Nidra posture facing east along with Sridevi and Bhudevi by his side adorned in resplendent jewels!
The marvels within
A temple complex unfolds a world of spiritual delight inside its sacred walls. Two enclosures adorn it: one houses sub shrines dedicated to Pundarika Valli and Alvars; while in its interior lies Govindaraja's main shrine with accompanying sub shrines dedicated to Krishna and Andal. Discover architectural marvels like Kalyana Venkateswara shrine with finely finished colonettes and an ornate central space adorned with projecting yalis; while marvel at the pavilion's centre which features magnificent columns made from grey-green granite covered by wooden roof; an incredible testament of ancient craftsmen!
