From almonds to cemeteries and deers

Just as New York’s Broadway hums with theatre and Paris’s Champs-Elysees exudes elegance, Park Street is a pulsating thoroughfare in the heart of Kolkata that weaves its own enchantment. From bustling eateries to late-night revelry, this iconic street celebrates history, culture, and modernity.

The earliest known name of Park Street was Badamtala due to the number of Almond trees along it, badam being the Hindi name for almonds. It was in the late 18th century when it became known as Burial Ground Road with the area housing several cemeteries, including the South Park Street Cemetery and the North Park Street Cemetery (now replaced by a school). Sir Elijah Impey, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in Calcutta, owned the only house in the area and it was surrounded by a deer park – the park thus lending its name to this vibrant street. Over time, it transformed into a hub of life, culture, and celebration.

Of nostalgia and vibrant nightlife

In the mid-20th century, Park Street was the epicentre of Kolkata’s nightlife. Imagine men in white dinner jackets savouring prawn cocktails and lobster thermidor at European-influenced restaurants like Mocambo and Moulin Rouge. The air buzzed with Motown music, and twenty-somethings danced their hearts out. Today, Park Street retains its allure, albeit with a modern twist.

A haven for bookworms and music-lovers

Park Street is a food lover's paradise offering a wide range of delicious treats, from flaky pastries to hearty breakfasts. Make sure to try the iconic desserts and savoury dishes available. Amidst the lively ambience, you will find inviting bookstores that cater to bookworms. Enjoy a cup of chai while getting lost in the world of literature.

As evening falls, the street comes alive with music. Hidden corners host live bands playing soulful tunes and rhythmic beats. Join the crowd and sway to the melodies. For breathtaking views, head to the rooftops. Enjoy cocktails while admiring the twinkling city lights and feeling the energy of Kolkata beneath your feet.

Festivals that liven up the park

As Durga Puja approaches, Park Street awakens. Strings of fairy lights crisscross overhead, casting a warm glow on the bustling crowd. Elaborate pandals (temporary structures) spring up, each a masterpiece of artistry. The scent of incense mingles with the aroma of street food, creating an intoxicating blend. The DJ spins a mix of Baul folk tunes and Bollywood beats. Park Street doesn’t sleep during Puja—it dances.

During Christmas, Park Street dons a different avatar. Fairy lights give way to twinkling stars, and carollers serenade passersby. The Park Street Christmas Festival draws people from all faiths. Choirs sing hymns, and families share plum cakes. It’s a celebration of unity—a reminder that Kolkata embraces diversity.

Explore around the Park

Besides the bustling Park Street, the city of Kolkata offers a rich array of attractions reflecting its history and diversity- from the Indian Museum, Victoria Memorial, Eden Gardens, to Birla Planetarium, St. Paul's Cathedral, and Maidan, making Park Street a cultural compass.
