A high-altitude wildlife haven

Discover the magic of wildlife at the Nainital Zoo, perched high in the majestic Himalayas! Set against the stunning backdrop of Sher Ka Danda Hill, this amazing zoo sits at an impressive altitude of 2,100 meters (6,900 feet) above sea level. Opened to the public in 1995, Nainital Zoo was established in 1984 and has the distinction of being one of only three high-altitude zoos in all of India. In 2002, it was renamed the Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo, adding a touch of honour to its already storied existence. Visiting this extraordinary zoo is like stepping into a nature lover's wonderland, filled with vibrant flora and fauna that are as unique as the mountain peaks themselves.

So, gear up for an unforgettable adventure where you can spot exotic animals against the backdrop of breathtaking mountain views!

Exotic wildlife encounters await!

As you stroll through its lush 4.6-hectare (11-acre) grounds, you’ll encounter a variety of extraordinary endangered species, including the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger, the elusive Tibetan Wolf, and the charming Japanese Macaque. The zoo is also home to an impressive collection of vibrant birds, such as the striking Golden Pheasant and the elegant Hill Partridge. With many animals lovingly adopted by individuals and organisations, every visit promises an unforgettable experience immersed in the beauty of nature and wildlife conservation.

An inspiration for young learners

Nainital Zoo is an exciting destination for young learners, offering vibrant outreach programs that educate visitors about wildlife conservation. It inspires a passion for protecting nature among children, students, local residents, and tourists alike. If you have kids, you can plan your visit around special occasions such as World Environment Day on June 5, Ozone Layer Conservation Day on September 16, and an exciting Wildlife Week from October 1 to 7!

You can also dive into a world of fun with our engaging activities, including adventure-filled zoo visits, challenging quizzes, creative painting contests, and stimulating debate competitions for students. It’s not just about learning, it’s about celebrating our natural world together! And the best part? Winners are recognised in a grand ceremony, receiving exciting prizes from a special dignitary!
