Where the eyes of Sati fell
Did you know that Naina means "eyes" or "beautiful eyes" in Hindi?
According to ancient legends, when Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva, could not bear the humiliation caused by her father, King Daksha, who excluded Sati and Lord Shiva from a yajna (sacred ritual), she immolated herself in the fire. Heartbroken and overwhelmed with grief, Lord Shiva carried her body as he wandered across the earth. It is believed that as he journeyed, parts of Sati's body fell at different places, sanctifying them. The Naina Devi Temple is said to mark the spot where the Goddess's eyes fell, making it a revered site of worship!
